Cenozoic stratigraphy of Colorado

Abstract

As a successor to previous Colorado stratigraphy charts (MS-53 Colorado Stratigraphic Chart and MS-54 Cretaceous Stratigraphy of Colorado), this Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) publication resulted from a collaboration between the CGS, USGS, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS). The chart was designed to illustrate Cenozoic stratigraphy spanning the state’s many sedimentary basins. It builds upon the work of dozens of colleagues and updates Richard Pearl’s seminal 1974 stratigraphy chart. The chart leverages the community’s stratigraphic work in both the subsurface and outcrop, and depicts new geochronologic constraints for many units. To facilitate comparison of strata to external forcing factors, the chart employs a linear timescale. Each unit’s dominant depositional environment is depicted, as are major mountain building events, erosional events, and regional unconformities.

California State Waters Map Series—Benthic habitat characterization in the region offshore Humboldt Bay, California

Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) geoform, substrate, and biotic component geographic information system (GIS) products were developed for the California State Waters of northern California in the region offshore of Humboldt Bay. The study was motivated by interest in development of offshore wind-energy capacity and infrastructure in Federal waters offshore. This project, carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), resulted in four data releases for individual map blocks that are part of the “California State Waters Map Series”: (1) Offshore of Arcata, (2) Offshore of Eureka, (3) Offshore of the Eel River, and (4) Offshore of Cape Mendocino. The study area consists of 436 square kilometers of multibeam echo sounder (MBES) data acquired by Fugro Pelagos, Inc., in 2007. Towed camera-sled video was acquired in 2009 and 2010 to supervise the classification of the MBES data into habitats, and single channel sparker data were collected to calculate sediment thickness above the transgressive unconformity. Using video observations of habitat as ground truth, derivatives of the MBES data were classified into 3 seafloor character types (hard-rugose, hard-flat, and soft-flat), 26 induration-slope-depth groups, and 15 geoforms. The study area substrate is predominantly soft-flat sediment (mud and fine sand) covering 73.6 percent of the area. Hard-flat substrate areas, predominantly coarse sediment in scour depressions, cover 5.4 percent of the study area. The hard-rugose substrate areas are primarily outcrops of layered sedimentary bedrock and constitute 20.9 percent of the study area. Fifteen geoforms were identified in the analysis. The predominant geoforms mirror the seafloor character results, shelf geoforms, rock outcrop geoforms, and scour depression geoforms. Rock and scour areas are restricted to the southern portion of the study area off Cape Mendocino where uplift has exposed bedrock. On the flat shelf area post-transgressive sediment varies in thickness from 1.7 meters (m) nearshore to 28.1 m offshore.

Ungulate migrations of the Western United States, volume 5

Many ungulates migrate between distinct summer and winter ranges to take advantage of spatially and temporally variable food sources and avoid threats such as predators and deep snow. In 2018, the U.S. Department of the Interior established Secretarial Order 3362, which provided Federal support to expand existing research efforts to study ungulate populations and conserve their migrations by enhancing habitat quality for ungulates across the Western United States. In response to the order, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created the Corridor Mapping Team, which is a collaboration among 11 State agencies, regional and Federal partners, and an expanding number of Tribal wildlife agencies. Together, the Corridor Mapping Team maps ungulate migrations throughout the Western United States and publishes them in the USGS “Ungulate Migrations of the Western United States” report series. This report details migrations and seasonal ranges from 36 additional herds and includes 2 herd updates detailed in previous reports. The Corridor Mapping Team has mapped the migrations and seasonal ranges of 218 unique herds for the report series, including this report. The report series serves as a map-based inventory of the ungulate migrations across the Western United States for biologists, managers, policymakers, and conservation practitioners. Building on the previous report volumes in the series, volume 5 additionally describes some of the local and national initiatives that are incorporating the products, tools, and information from this growing USGS report series.

Stratigraphic notes—Volume 2, 2025

This is the second volume in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) series of reports on stratigraphy entitled “Stratigraphic Notes,” which consists of short papers that highlight stratigraphic studies, changes in stratigraphic nomenclature, and explanations of stratigraphic names and concepts used on published geologic maps. “Stratigraphic Notes” is a long-term (multiyear), multivolume publication containing articles that address updates or revisions to stratigraphic nomenclature (and whose content ultimately will be incorporated by National Geologic Map Database personnel into Geolex, https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/ ). We welcome papers for the “Stratigraphic Notes” series from geoscientists of the USGS, of State Geological Surveys, and from academicians. Papers can be submitted for publication in “Stratigraphic Notes” by contacting the USGS Geologic Names Committee ( gnc@usgs.gov ). As new “Stratigraphic Notes” volumes are published, links to the volumes will be posted at https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1879 .
