Progress report: Radionuclide transport in the Pasco to Vancouver, Washington, reach of the Columbia River, July 1962 to September 1963

The disposition of radionuclides in and along the 380-mile reach of the Columbia River between the Hanford, Wash., Atomic Energy Commission reactors (the major radionuclide source) and the head of the estuary is a first step in understanding the environmental cycling and ultimate fate of the discharged radioactive materials. Preliminary results for the study period, July 1962 to September 1963, are presented for radionuclide, sediment, and water data from stations on the Columbia River and from stations near the mouths of the Snake River, the Willamette River, and other Columbia River tributaries.

Tectonic map of Indonesia: A progress report

Orogeny, volcanism, and seismicity are now intensely active in Indonesia. Many Dutch tectonists--Brouwer, Umbgrove, van Bemifielen, Smit4Sibinga, Vening Meinesz, Westerveld, and others--recognized that this complex cluster of islands represents an early stage in the evolution of orogenic belts. Not until Indonesia is understood can we comprehend the Alps. This report summarizes some aspects of work to date on the Tectonic Map of Indonesia. The preparation of this map is a joint project of the Geological Survey of Indonesia and the United States Geological Survey, sponsored by the Government of Indonesia and the United States Agency for International Development. The Tectonic Map of Indonesia will be published at a scale of 1:5,000,000. Adjacent regions in other countries will be included to provide a broader context. The map limits presently envisaged are the parallels of 12° N. and 15° S., and the meridians of 91° and 148° E. Tectonic features will be shown in many colors and patterns. Bathymetry is being newly compiled, and will be shown with contours and shades of blue. Figure 1 shows the islands of Indonesia.

Geology and water quality at selected locations in the San Antonio area, Texas, Progress Report, 1969

The Edwards aquifer is the principal source of water supply for the San Antonio area. Increasing urban development on or adjacent to the recharge area of the aquifer is causing great concern because of possible pollution of the ground water. A detailed map of the surface geology has been prepared for areas where the greatest threat of pollution exists. Water-quality data are being collected throughout the San Antonio area to provide background reference information and to detect any current pollution of the ground water in the Edwards and associated limestones. Mapping of the surface geology will continue in areas where waste waters may be recharging the aquifer. Water-quality data will be collected at additional sites, and some sites will be resampled where pollution may be occurring or where more background data are needed.
