NCEER seminars on earthquakes
In May of 1986, the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) in Buffalo, New York, held the first seminar in its new monthly forum called Seminars on Earthquakes. The Center's purpose in initiating the seminars was to educate the audience about earthquakes, to facilitate cooperation between the NCEER and visiting researchers, and to enable visiting speakers to learn more about the NCEER
Earthquakes, March-April 1986
There was one major earthquake (7.0-7.9) in Mexico on April 30, during this reporting period. Earthquake-related deaths were reported in India and Peru. In the United States, California experienced three widely felt earthquakes.
Earthquakes, January-February 1987
There were two major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during the first two months of the year. The first, on January 30 in the South Sandwich Islands region, was in an unpopulated area; the second was on February 8 in New Guinea. In the United States the largest earthquake during this reporting period was a magntidue 6.7 on February 27 in the Aleutian Islands.

There was one major earthquake (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period in Taiwan, a magnitude 7.8, which caused deaths and consideralbe damage. Earthquake-related deaths were reported in Bulgaria and in a mine in Poland. There was no significant earthquakes in the United States.

There were two major earthquakes during the last two months of the year, both in the Gulf of Alaska. Earthquake-related deaths were reported from Mexico, Japan and Indonesia. Southern California was hit by two strong earthquakes; both caused damage and some injuries.

There was one great earthquake (8.0 and above) during this reporting period in the South Pacific in the Kermadec Islands. There were no major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) but earthquake-related deaths were reported in Greece and in El Salvador. There were no destrcutive earthquakes in the United States.
Earthquakes, July-August 1988
Major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) struck the Burma-India border on August 6 and the Solomon Islands on August 10. The most devastating earthquake during this reporting period was a magnitude 6.6 on the Nepal-India border on August 20. In the United States, there were no casualties from earthquakes but moderate earthquakes (5.0-5.9) were experienced in California, Hawaii and Utah.

there were no major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during the first 2 months of the year. the USSR was the only country reporting earthquake-related deaths during this period. In the United States a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in southern California on Januray 19 caused several injuries and minor damage.
Earthquakes, March-April 1989
The first major earthquake (7.0-7.9) of the year hit Mexico on April 25, killing three people and causing some damage. Earthquake-related deaths were also reported from Malawi, China, and New Britain. In the United States minor damage was reported from both central and southern California and from Puerto Rico.

The first great earthquake (8.0 or above) to occur since 1986 struck in this period in the Macquarie Island region, a very sparsely populated area. In the United States a strong earthquake hit Hawaii on June 26 injuring five people and causing considerable damage.

March-April 1990 There were five major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period; in the Fiji Islands, the Vanuatu Islands, Costa Rica, the Mariana Islands, and the Minahassa Peninsula. Earthquake-related deaths were reported from Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, and China. There were no significant earthquakes in the United States during this period. May-June 1990 This reporting period was quite active, seismically speaking, and included the deadliest earthquake in the world since the 1976 Chinese earthquake; a magnitude 7.7 which hit Iran and killed over 40,000 people. There were also three other major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during this period. Tow of these quakes occurred in Sudan, a magnitude 7.2 on May 20 and a magnitude 7.0 on May 24. The third, a magnitude 7.0, occurred in the Philippines on June 14. There were no earthquakes in the United States which caused damage or casualties during this period. July-August 1990 There was on major earthquake (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period, a magnitude 7.8 in the Philippine Islands on July 16. Earthquake-related deaths were reported from the Philippine Islands, the USSR, and Ecuador. In the United States, no casualties or damage was reported from earthquakes. September-October 1990 There were no major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period. Earthquake-related deaths were reported in South Africa, China, and Pakistan. November-December 1990 There were two major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during the last 2 months of the year, one in the Komandorsky Islands region and one in the New Britain region. Earthquake-related deaths were reported from Iran, Italy, Taiwan, Greece, and Costa Rica. There were no earthquake-related deaths in the United States.

There was one major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period, a magnitude 7.1 on July 6 in the Vanuatu Islands of teh South Pacific Ocean. In the United States, a strong earthquake, a magnitude 6.0, occurred on July 31 near the coast of northern California and caused some damage
Earthquakes, March-April 1987
There was one major earthquake (7.0-7.9) during this reporting period. This quake was located near the coast of northern Chile and had a magnitude of 7.3. Destructive earthquakes also struck Ecuador, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand. There were no damaging earthquakes in the United States during this period.

The first major earthquake (7.0-7.9) of the year was in Burma on January 5 and was the only major earthquake during this reporting period. The first earthquake-related deaths reported were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the USSR on January 31. Earthquake-related deaths were also reported in France from the earthquake of February 13.
