Preliminary results of geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies in part of the Virginia City quadrangle, Nevada

Geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies in the Comstock Lode district and adjoining parts of the Virginia Range near Virginia City, Nev., have resulted in recognition of two geophysical anomalies and several geochemical anomalies in an area north of Virginia City. The geophysical anomalies were found during an induced-polarization survey carried out to aid in tracing the Comstock fault, the principal structure localizing the bonanza silver-gold deposits of the Comstock Lode district, in an area of intensely altered rock and alluvial cover about 5 miles north of Virginia City. Geochemical anomalies showing mercury in excess of 5 ppm (parts per million) were found in altered rocks along the Cornstock fault near Cornwall Knob about 5 miles north of Virginia City and in the Washington Hill area, 6 miles farther north.

Geologic map of the Argyre quadrangle of Mars

The geology of the Argyre quadrangle of Mars is dominated by the conspicuous Argyre basin, defined by a rim of rugged mountain blocks that surround a nearly circular expanse of plains 800 km across. Of the large (greater than 500 km in diameter) basins identified on Mars, Argyre is the best preserved and possibly youngest. Basins appear to be traps for eolian debris and evidently are source areas for some of the dust storms that periodically envelop the planet. The quadrangle lies within the densely cratered province that characterizes the southern hemisphere, contrasting with sparsely cratered plains generally confined to the northern hemisphere. Northwest of Argyre an outlier of sparsely cratered, ridged plains extends into the quadrangle from the Coprates region. Northeast of the basin are the cratered uplands, parts of which are presumed to represent remnants of the earliest martian crust (Wilhelms, 1974). South of the quadrangle the cratered plateau is replaced by the pitted, etched, layered, and mantled terrains that characterize the south polar region (Sharp, 1973a; Condit and Soderblom, 1978). Constructional volcanic landforms were not recognized within the map area.

Geological Survey and selected U.S. Bureau of Mines and Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys reports and maps on Alaska released during 1975, indexed by quadrangle

All Geological Survey reports and maps on Alaska published or released to open files during 1975 are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been divided for topographic mapping (p. 3). Also listed are U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska, but not those that deal exclusively with other subjects such as economics. Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys published and open-filed reports and maps that were received by the Alaskan Geology Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey before March 1, 1976 are listed; the availability of several other reports and maps was publicly announced, but the documents were not available to me in time for them to be included here. Most of the reports and maps in this index bear a 1975 imprint date. Others bear earlier imprint dates, but were not released until 1975. All Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys open-file reports and maps were withdrawn in 1974 for revision, consolidation, or assignment of new identification numbers. Those reissued reports and maps that I received before March 1, 1976 are listed in this index, no matter what imprint date they may bear. Also included are a few reports that were released before 1975, but hitherto had escaped my attention. Reports that deal with Alaska as a whole, with areas that can not be identified with a specific quadrangle, or that are mainly statistical presentations are listed under ALASKA - GENERAL, as are indexes and the like. Reports and maps that deal with offshore areas not within quadrangle boundaries are listed under OFFSHORE AREAS. The ALASKA - GENERAL and OFFSHORE AREAS lists appear before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.
