Bibliography of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides in the environment

Citations from the scientific literature on the environmental behavior and occurrence of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides were obtained from three computerized bibliographic databases: Agricola, Chemical Abstracts, and Selected Water Resources Abstracts. Approximately 10,000 citations were found but more than half were eliminated because they were directed strictly toward agricultural or industrial uses. The remaining 4,000 were categorized by environmental process, occurrence, analysis, toxicity, or physical/chemical property. The information is available in ASCII files on 3 1/2-inch diskette.

An ARC/Info point coverage of Mineral Resource Data System (MRDS) locations in eleven western states

This ARC/Info coverage, derived from the USGS Mineral Resource Data System (MRDS), contains 60,490 records that fall within the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming. The dataset has 13 fields containing information on record identification, location, commodity, geology, and deposit type. The data for this report was retrieved from the master database as a tab text file and imported into a Microsoft Access database. The data was then imported into ESRI’s ArcView where shape files were created. These shape files were then converted into an ARC/INFO coverage.

Program to convert SUDS2ASC files to a single binary SEGY file

This program, SUDS2SEGY, converts and combines ASCII files created using SUDS2ASC Version 2.60, to a single SEGY file. SUDS2ASC has been used previously to create an ASCII file of three-component seismic data for an individual recording station. However, many seismic processing packages have difficulty reading in ASCII data. In addition, it may be cumbersome to process a separate file for each recording station, particularly if traces from different recording stations contain a different number of data samples and/or a different start time. This new program - SUDS2SEGY - combines these recording station files into a single SEGY file. In addition, SUDS2SEGY normalizes the trace times so that each trace starts at a given time and consists of a fixed number of samples. This normalization allows seismic data from many different stations to be read in as a single "data gather". SUDS2SEGY also produces a report summarizing the offset and maximum absolute amplitude for each component in a station file. These data are output separately to an ASCII file and can be subsequently input to a plotting package.

Surficial geologic map of the Salem Depot-Newburyport East-Wilmington-Rockport 16-quadrangle area in northeast Massachusetts

The surficial geologic map shows the distribution of nonlithified earth materials at land surface in an area of 16 7.5-minute quadrangles (total 658 mi2) in northeast Massachusetts. The geologic map differentiates surficial materials of Quaternary age on the basis of their lithologic characteristics (grain size, sedimentary structures, mineral and rock-particle composition), constructional geomorphic features, stratigraphic relationships, and age. Surficial earth materials significantly affect human use of the land, and an accurate description of their distribution is particularly important for water resources, construction aggregate resources, earth-surface hazards assessments, and land-use decisions. This compilation of surficial geologic materials is an interim product that defines the areas of exposed bedrock, and the boundaries between glacial till, glacial stratified deposits, and overlying postglacial deposits. This work is part of a comprehensive study to produce a statewide digital map of the surficial geology at a 1:24,000-scale level of accuracy. This report includes explanatory text (PDF), a regional map at 1:50,000 scale (PDF), quadrangle maps at 1:24,000 scale (PDF files), GIS data layers (ArcGIS shapefiles), metadata for the GIS layers, scanned topographic base maps (TIF), and a readme.txt file.

Users' manual and installation guide for the EverVIEW Slice and Dice Tool (Version 1.0 Beta)

Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) is a self-describing, machine-independent file format for storing array-oriented scientific data. Over the past few years, there has been a growing movement within the community of natural resource managers in The Everglades, Fla., to use NetCDF as the standard data container for datasets based on multidimensional arrays. As a consequence, a need arose for additional tools to view and manipulate NetCDF datasets, specifically to create subsets of large NetCDF files. To address this need, we created the EverVIEW Slice and Dice Tool to allow users to create subsets of grid-based NetCDF files. The major functions of this tool are (1) to subset NetCDF files both spatially and temporally; (2) to view the NetCDF data in table form; and (3) to export filtered data to a comma-separated value file format.

Hydrothermal alteration maps of the central and southern Basin and Range Province of the United States compiled from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data

Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data and Interactive Data Language (IDL) logical operator algorithms were used to map hydrothermally altered rocks in the central and southern parts of the Basin and Range province of the United States. The hydrothermally altered rocks mapped in this study include (1) hydrothermal silica-rich rocks (hydrous quartz, chalcedony, opal, and amorphous silica), (2) propylitic rocks (calcite-dolomite and epidote-chlorite mapped as separate mineral groups), (3) argillic rocks (alunite-pyrophyllite-kaolinite), and (4) phyllic rocks (sericite-muscovite). A series of hydrothermal alteration maps, which identify the potential locations of hydrothermal silica-rich, propylitic, argillic, and phyllic rocks on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) band 7 orthorectified images, and geographic information systems shape files of hydrothermal alteration units are provided in this study.
