GEOTHERM user guide

GEOTHERM is a computerized geothermal resources file developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The file contains data on geothermal fields, wells, and chemical analyses from the United states and international sources. The General Information Processing System (GIPSY) in the IBM 370/155 computer is used to store and retrieve data. The GIPSY retrieval program contains simple commands which can be used to search the file, select a narrowly defined subset, sort the records, and output the data in a variety of forms. Eight commands are listed and explained so that the GEOTHERM file can be accessed directly by geologists. No programming experience is necessary to retrieve data from the file.

Program TracePlot, version 1.1; seismic trace plotting program for the Macintosh

Program TracePlot, Version 1.1, is a Macintosh software application to access a SEG-Y format seismic data file and display the seismic traces on the CRT screen of a Macintosh microcomputer. Both color and monochrome monitors are supported. Display modes are Wiggle-trace, Variable Area, or Wiggle plus Variable Area. Horizontal and vertical resolution is dependant upon the size of the monitor that is attached to the computer. The user controls the following parameters: 1) number of traces to be displayed on the screen at any one time, 2) the time window displayed, 3) the seismic trace in the file at which to begin plotting and trace increment to display thereafter, 4) plot direction 5) timing-line annotation increment, and 6) type of gain to apply (either constant gain factor, or trace-by-trace normalization). A pull-down menu provides interactive help during program execution. A utility program is also included which provides the function of copying a portion of a SEG-Y format data file to another file.

Measurements of salinity, temperature, and tides in south San Francisco Bay, California, at Dumbarton Bridge: 1990-93 water years

The U.S. Geological Survey measures salinity, temperature, and water levels (tides) in southern San Francisco Bay at Dumbarton Bridge as part of a cooperative program with the California State Department of Water Resources. During water years 1990-93, measurements were made at 15-minute intervals with electonic sensors located approximately one meter above the substrate in approximately six meters of water (at mean water level). During March and April of 1991 and 1992, salinity and temperature also were measured with a self-contained system floating one meter below the surface of the water. Sections of the data set were selected to illustrate influences of tidal currents, weather events, and seasonal and interannual variations in climate on salinity, temperature, and water levels at this location. The edited data are provided on high-density disks in comma-delimited, ASCII text files.

Maps showing geology, oil and gas fields, and geologic provinces of the Arctic

Introduction This CD-ROM was compiled according to the methodology developed by the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Project . The geologic map of the Arctic was compiled and synthesized from the Circumpolar Geological Map of the Arctic, by Okulitch A.V., Lopatin B.G., and Jackson H.R., scale 1:6,000,000, published by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1989 (see References ). Specific details of the data sources are given in the metadata files on this CD-ROM. Map units were kept as close as possible to original map (more than 100 unique values). These Arctic maps were compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (ESRI) ARC/INFO software. Political boundaries and cartographic representations on this map are shown (with permission) from ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M digital coverage. They have no political significance and are displayed as general reference only. Portions of this database covering the coastline, rivers and country boundaries contain proprietary property of ESRI. (© 1992 and 1996, Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. All rights reserved. The bathymetric data were derived from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) which was downloaded from the NOAA web site. Oil and gas centerpoints were derived from Probe 4.0 database - proprietary property of Petroleum Information/Dwights LLC d/b/a/IHS Energy Group. Specific details of the data sources and map compilation are given in the metadata files on this CD-ROM.
