Geologic map of the Arcadia Quadrangle of Mars

The Arcadia quadrangle of Mars contains three distinct geological provinces: (1) the 1000-km-diameter shield field volcano of Alba Patera, which occupies the southwestern quadrant ; (2) the complex T empe province, which comprises a number of younger volcanic and sedimentary blanket deposits over an ancient, highly cratered crust forming a plateau in the southwestern quadrant ; and (3) a plains province, consisting of northern wind-swept , c ratered plains and some younger subpolar deposits in the northeast corner of the quadrangle, plus less cratered plains surrounding much of the T empe and Alba regions. The plateau, informally named the Tempe Plateau and part of the proposed forma l term Tempe Terra, is separated from the main regions of cratered martian highlands to the south by Kasei Vallis , appearing at the extreme southeast corner of the map, which slopes northeastward onto Chryse Planitia.

Maps showing generalized structure contours on the tops of the Wasatch and Green River Formations, geologic sections, and contours of thickness of the Green River Formation, southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado

These maps were prepared as part of a hydrologic investigation in the southeastern Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado. (See index map.) Most of the study area of 2,350 square miles is underlain by consolidated rocks of Tertiary age – the Wasatch, Green River, and Uinta Formations. The Green River Formation contains thick beds of oil shale, which are of considerable economic importance as a potential source of petroleum products. Cashion (1967, pl. 1) showed detailed structure contours on the top of the thickest of the oil-shale beds – the Mahogany bed. The generalized structure contours shoe=wn on sheet 1 for the tops of the Wasatch and Green River Formations were prepared to serve as a guide to further data acquisition. Structural high or low areas, which could affect the direction of ground-water movement, would be considered in planning future test wells. The generalized map of the Green River formation (sheet 2) could be an indication of changes in aquifer thickness, and this would also serve as a guide for future test drilling.

Maps showing formation temperatures and configurations of the tops of the Minnelusa Formation and the Madison Limestone, Powder River basin, Wyoming, Montana, and adjacent areas

This report is part of a study to describe the hydrologic framework needed to evaluate the water resources of the Paleozoic age aquifers in the Northern Great Plains coal region (fig 1). Preliminary studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and State agencies in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota have indicated that these aquifers might provide significant percentage of the water requirements for coal development. Data in this report are needed to help evaluate the potential of the Paleozoic age aquifers as a source for water supplies. The results will also be used to provide information for the orderly development of the aquifers.

Geologic map of the south side of the Moon

The map of the lunar region below lat 45 ˚ S. is the sixth part of a complete geolog ic recon naissance mapping of the moon at 1:5,000,000 scale. The upper half of the map portrays the geology of the earth-facing or near side, and the lower half shows terrain that was unknown before spacecr aft photography. The near side that was well photographed at resolutions of 0.1 to 0.5 km by Lunar Orbiter IV, but coverage of the far side is uneven quality (fig. 1). The geology of a small area near the south pole that was in shadow during the Orbiter missions can be partly inferred from the nature of adjacent units.
