Surficial geologic map of the Owlshead Mountains 30' x 60' quadrangle, Inyo and San Bernardino Counties, California

Abstract

The surficial geologic map of the Owlshead Mountains 30' x 60' quadrangle depicts the distribution and characteristics of surficial-deposit materials and neotectonic deformation for an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometers (km 2 ) located in the western Basin and Range Province of eastern California. The map represents a new compilation of the surficial geology that encompasses deposits within the late Pliocene to Quaternary. The map is based primarily on new mapping conducted between 2001 and 2009. Map compilation was supported by field observations distributed across the map area, combined with reference to several published and unpublished mapping sources that mostly emphasized neotectonic deformation. The surficial-deposit units included in the map follow a classification scheme that systematically denotes depositional process, relative age, and any secondary sedimentologic or morphologic characteristics. Identification, correlation, and age estimation of map units are based primarily on the relative degree of development of certain time-dependent characteristics such as surface morphology, including local dissection and surface preservation, surface clast modification, and degree of soil development; these characteristics are implicitly incorporated into unit designations. The map represents a detailed and regionally uniform synthesis of the late Neogene geology for this large area that provides a framework applicable to many interpretative studies, such as regional patterns of deposition and dissection; surface drainage development and evolution; and the distribution, style, and timing of neotectonic deformation.

Bathymetric maps, surface areas, and storage capacities of Council Grove Lake and Marion Reservoir, Kansas, and Pine Creek Lake, Oklahoma, 2024

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, completed high-resolution multibeam bathymetric surveys to compute new elevation-area-capacity tables for Council Grove Lake and Marion Reservoir, Kansas, and Pine Creek Lake, Oklahoma. Elevation-area-capacity tables identify the relation between the water-surface elevation, surface area, and storage capacity of the lake. The surface areas and storage capacities of each lake were computed from bathymetric surfaces combining multibeam echo sounder data collected in 2024 and light detection and ranging point-cloud data collected in 2016 and 2018.

Earth Mapping Resources Initiative protocols—Sampling hard-rock mine waste and perpetual mine water sources

Supporting the overarching goal to evaluate critical minerals nationwide, the mine waste characterization effort in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Mapping Resources Initiative has created a series of protocols to standardize sampling carried out under this effort by the participating State geological surveys and their cooperators. The protocols are based on published, reviewed methods that can be deployed in the field. The protocols include (1) collecting and processing composite samples of mine and mill waste, including tailings, waste rock, gangue, heap leach piles, ore stockpiles, slag, or other mineralized and processed materials and (2) collecting and preserving water samples from perpetual or long-term mine water sources. The protocols also specify information to document on field sheets and detail the collection of geospatial data. The analytical methods used by the USGS and USGS contract laboratories are described in this report, including the data delivery pathway for USGS-derived data.

Field observations and logs from the Rose Hip trench exposure across a north-facing scarp within the Seattle Fault Zone, southern Bainbridge Island, Washington

The Seattle Fault Zone is an approximately 70-km-long, east-west-trending zone of south-dipping blind reverse faults within the Puget lowland region in Washington. Because of the proximity, the Seattle Fault Zone poses a significant earthquake hazard to the Puget sound and Seattle metropolitan regions. We present preliminary mapping and trench-site information from a paleoseismic investigation across a newly identified active fault scarp located within the hanging wall of the Seattle Fault Zone on southern Bainbridge Island, Washington. The trench exposed monoclinally folded Miocene bedrock, fractured and faulted glacial-related deposits, and laminated lacustrine deposits capped by slope-derived colluvium. The observations from this investigation record late Pleistocene to Holocene north-vergent folding and faulting along this new fault scarp.
