Abstract

Maintaining accurate mortality records for endangered species is important for guiding management and conservation actions. Mortalities of whooping cranes ( Grus americana ) in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population (AWBP) are documented in published records from 1950 through 2010. This paper documents publicly available records of known mortalities from 2011 through 2023, and updates historic records from 1950 to 2010. Public sightings and telemetry carcass records were restricted to fledged whooping cranes from the AWBP and stratified by confirmed, suspected, and unknown causes across the annual range (i.e., summer, migration, and winter). This mortality update provides more certainty associated with available carcass data and reduces discrepancies in existing published information.

Inland habitat selection model for wintering whooping cranes

Inland habitat use by wintering Aransas-Wood Buffalo whooping cranes ( Grus americana ) is expected to increase given projected population growth and observations of some whooping cranes using inland winter habitat in addition to coastal marshes. We developed resource utilization functions using ‘random forests’ to model whooping crane use as a function of environmental covariates considered important for whooping crane use. Covariates associated with distance to cropland, distance to development, and wetness or standing water were the most influential in model prediction. The model estimated that the 50% predicted use contour encompassed 34,925 hectares (ha) and the 95% predicted use contour encompassed 328,928 ha within the study area. While presently limited by the small sample size of inland wintering areas observations ( n = 7 cranes with ≥50 locations), this model provides an initial tool for identifying potential impacts to whooping crane inland habitat use in proximity to anthropogenic development. The model can be expanded to incorporate future data to reduce uncertainty.

The diets of wild and reintroduced whooping cranes

Abstract: We characterized the diets of the recently established Eastern Migratory Population (EMP) and the extant Aransas Wood Buffalo population (AWBP). Starting in 2013, frozen proventriculus and ventriculus contents from previously collected dead whooping cranes from both populations were examined to identify dietary items and quantity. EMP whooping cranes (n = 29) consumed benthic macro-invertebrates, beetles, crabs/crayfish, vegetation, seeds, mollusks, and unidentifiable vertebrates. The diets of AWBP whooping cranes (n = 7) examined included all the same food items except benthic macro-invertebrates. Both populations also consumed a variety of non-food items, including plastic and metal. Our data suggests that the wild and reintroduced whooping crane populations are consuming similar types and amounts of food items to meet their dietary requirements.

Whooping crane stay length in relation to stopover site characteristics

Whooping crane ( Grus americana ) migratory stopovers can vary in length from hours to more than a month. Stopover sites provide food resources and safety essential for the completion of migration. Factors such as weather, climate, demographics of migrating groups, and physiological condition of migrants influence migratory movements of cranes (Gruidae) to varying degrees. However, little research has examined the relationship between habitat characteristics and stopover stay length in cranes. Site quality may relate to stay length with longer stays that allow individuals to improve body condition, or with shorter stays because of increased foraging efficiency. We examined this question using habitat data collected at 605 use locations from 449 stopover sites throughout the United States Great Plains visited by 58 whooping cranes from the Aransas–Wood Buffalo Population tracked with platform transmitting terminals. Research staff compiled land cover (e.g., hectares of corn; landscape level) and habitat metric (e.g., maximum water depth; site level) data for day use and evening roost locations via site visits and geospatial mapping. We used Random Forest regression analyses to estimate importance of covariates for predicting stopover stay length. Site-level variables explained 9% of variation in stay length, whereas landscape-level variables explained 43%. Stay length increased with latitude and the proportion of land cover as open-water slough with emergent vegetation as well as alfalfa, whereas stay length decreased as open-water lacustrine wetland land cover increased. At the site-level, stopover duration increased with wetted width at riverine sites but decreased with wetted width at palustrine and lacustrine wetland sites. Stopover duration increased with mean distance to visual obstruction as well as where management had reduced the height of vegetation through natural (e.g., grazing) or mechanical (e.g., harvesting) means and decreased with maximum water depth. Our results suggest that stopover length increases with the availability of preferred land cover types for foraging. High quality stopover sites with abundant forage resources may help whooping cranes maintain fat reserves important to their annual life cycle.
