A digital reference collection for aquatic macroinvertebrates of North America

Abstract

Aquatic invertebrates are a key component of freshwater ecosystems, and understanding aquatic invertebrate taxonomy is a cornerstone of freshwater science. Physical reference collections of expertly identified voucher specimens are the ‘gold-standard’ used to confirm specimen identifications. However, most biologists lack access to such collections, which themselves tend to be highly regionalized and somewhat limited in terms of taxonomic scope. The North American Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Digital Reference Collection (NAAMDRC; https://sciencebase.usgs.gov/naamdrc ) was developed by the US Geological Survey (USGS) to overcome these limitations of physical collections. NAAMDRC provides users with public-domain, high-quality digital photographs to help verify specimen identifications.

Stream health shows indirect and threshold responses to implementation of agricultural conservation practices

Many agricultural conservation practices (hereafter conservation practices) are intended to protect streams from the deleterious effects of agriculture, but desired effects of their implementation are not always realized. Understanding the pathways through which conservation practices influence stream health can guide future implementation. Our goal was to quantify how conservation practices influence stream health in pastureland watersheds. We asked 4 research questions: R1) What are the effects of land use and conservation practices on instream conditions? R2) What are the effects of instream conditions on biota? R3) What are the relative effects of land use, conservation practices, and instream conditions on biota? R4) How do conservation practice density (no./ha) and agricultural land use interact to influence stream health? We collected data on water quality (total suspended solids, total N, total P, and Escherichia coli bacteria), instream habitat (substrate embeddedness and bank stability), and macroinvertebrate communities from 31 sites in the upper Tennessee River basin of southwest Virginia, USA. The sites collectively represented spatial analytical gradients of agricultural land use and density of conservation practices, with the dominant practices including prescribed grazing, brush management, and fencing. We found that conservation practice implementation was indirectly related to biotic assemblages through changes in water quality and habitat, but practice density in the study area was not associated with instream conditions that supported biotic communities representative of reference conditions. Further improving instream habitat conditions may require innovative conservation practices, targeted placement of practices in critical source areas of pollutants, or higher densities of practices.

Predicting reach-scale macroinvertebrate community changes due to declining flows in an aridland river

Understanding the connection between streamflow and macroinvertebrate community structure is critical for managing river ecosystems under scenarios of change caused by human activities and drought. Streamflow influences physical habitat characteristics, including depth, water velocity, and substrate composition, which structure macroinvertebrate communities. Although strong empirical evidence has linked macroinvertebrates to these variables, most studies are correlative, and predictive approaches that link altered streamflow to changes in habitat availability and community structure remain limited. To address this gap, we coupled benthic macroinvertebrate surveys with reach-scale, 2-dimensional hydraulic models to quantify changes in community structure in response to altered streamflows. We characterized macroinvertebrate communities and physical habitat conditions in riffle, run, and pool mesohabitats across 3 reaches of a free-flowing section of the Verde River (Arizona, USA) over 3 y and developed hydraulic models using overflight data, ground surveys, and streamflow monitoring. Macroinvertebrate communities differed among mesohabitats, with riffles supporting higher macroinvertebrate densities and pools exhibiting higher taxonomic richness. The 2-dimensional hydraulic models indicated that declining streamflows could reduce the area of suitable habitat in riffles and runs relative to pools, potentially shifting the distribution of mesohabitats and altering community composition. These changes may lead to declines in overall macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance under reduced flow conditions. By explicitly linking streamflow to habitat availability and community structure, this study demonstrates how integrating hydraulic modeling with biological surveys can improve predictions of ecological response to flow alteration. This framework provides a basis for flow management strategies aimed at maintaining habitat heterogeneity and supporting biodiversity in river networks.

Fish introductions related to strong and diversifying effects on zooplankton assemblages in high-elevation mountain lakes

Freshwater environments are threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors. High-elevation mountain lakes are particularly vulnerable to introduced nonnative fish and nutrient deposition because they were historically fishless and typically oligotrophic. To understand the potential effects of fish introduction and nutrient levels on high-elevation lake ecosystems, we assessed differences in zooplankton size, biomass, and density in 76 alpine and subalpine lakes in the Wind River Range, Wyoming, USA, and related those differences to the presence of introduced trout and to food quality (seston nutrient content) and quantity (chlorophyll a concentration). Trout presence, and to a lesser extent trout species, were the strongest predictors of zooplankton composition. Fishless lakes were dominated by low densities of copepods and other large-bodied taxa, and lakes with introduced trout were dominated by high densities of cladocerans, rotifers, and other small-bodied taxa. These assemblage differences are likely because trout reduce or eliminate all large zooplankton taxa by size-selective predation, including predation on Hesperodiaptomus shoshone (S. A. Forbes, 1893), a keystone species that effectively controls populations of rotifers and small crustacean zooplankton taxa. In contrast, the quantity and quality of seston was not associated with zooplankton assemblages. Zooplankton composition in lakes with Rocky Mountain Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus virginalis (Girard, 1856) or Golden Trout Oncorhynchus aguabonita (Jordan, 1892) was highly variable, but in lakes with primarily Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814), zooplankton composition was consistently distinct from that in fishless lakes, suggesting that Brook Trout introductions altered the zooplankton assemblage to a greater extent than Cutthroat or Golden trout did. These results contribute to global evidence that predatory fish introductions fundamentally restructure alpine lake food webs. The slow or incomplete recovery of native zooplankton assemblages following fish removal suggests long-term ecological legacies of fish introductions and highlights the importance of understanding factors that promote resilience in high-elevation lake ecosystems.
