Taxonomic revisions in the genus Arctostaphylos (Ericaceae)

Abstract

Changes are made in the nomenclature of species and subspecies in the genus Arctostaphylos (Ericaceae). In this study, the focus is on species found in the coast ranges of California. Changes are made in A. nortensis from the area around the Oregon border with California, in the A. nevadensis complex in the North Coast Ranges, in the A. nummularia complex of the north to central coast, in the A. tomentosa complex of the central coast to the Channel Islands, and in the A. hookeri and A. pilosula complex of the central coast. Also discussed are other changes presented elsewhere that will affect the Arctostaphylos treatment in the next edition of the Jepson Manual.

Bay Miwok evening primrose: A new subspecies of Oenothera deltoides (Onagraceae) endemic to California

California contains exceptional biodiversity in geography and plant life, including numerous endemic species, some of which are cryptic. The Oenothera deltoides Torr. & Frém. species complex represents a prime example of cryptic diversity. Here, we recognize a new subspecies of Oenothera deltoides , O. deltoides subsp. julpunensis S.F.Jones, subsp. nov., that is a local endemic of windblown sand deposits on the eastern Antioch Dunes sand sheet in the San Francisco Bay-Delta region of California, USA. With the goal of providing clarity to managers of listed species and better understanding of California's diverse flora, we addressed the puzzle of O. deltoides in the region by combining range-wide field surveys with modern genomic tools. We describe the proposed subspecies, its ecology and distribution, and discuss its conservation. As a somewhat cryptic local endemic with small population size and disappearing habitat, the proposed subspecies would benefit from conservation and management to persist as a member of the California flora.

Budburst timing of valley oaks at Hastings Reservation, central coastal California

We studied the timing of budburst of valley oak ( Quercus lobata Née) at Hastings Reservation, central coastal California. Similar to other taxa, budburst was advanced by warmer temperatures. Over the 30-year study period, however, there were no significant trends in either air temperature or the timing of budburst, except during the 2014–2016 drought, during which the earliest budburst dates were advanced. Several individual tree characteristics correlated with budburst timing, including access to ground water, soil available phosphorus, and elevation, the effects of which were in turn correlated with winter microclimatic conditions of individual trees. Budburst timing was significantly related to both subsequent acorn production and radial growth; trees leafing out on or near the population mean for the year experienced greater radial growth and produced larger acorn crops than trees leafing out earlier or later than the mean. Differences in acorn production were due to both differences in phenology among trees and plasticity in the phenology of individual trees across years, while differences in radial growth were primarily due to plasticity in individual tree phenology. Valley oak phenology exhibits considerable variability; the extent to which this plasticity will help this keystone California species adapt to future climate change remains to be seen.

A new species of Helianthus (Asteracae) from Clark County, Nevada

Helianthus devernii T.M.Draper is described as a new endemic species from two small desert spring populations found within Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Clark County, NV. Morphological data and nuclear ribosomal ITS marker data place it in section Ciliares series Pumili . Furthermore, the molecular data allies it most closely to H. pumilus Nutt. Helianthus devernii differs from H. pumilus by its sessile one nerved opposite and alternate leaves, glabrous glaucous stems, and overall smaller heads. The two known populations of H. devernii of approximately 400 individuals occur near the Las Vegas Valley and are threatened by heavy recreational use and exotic plants and animals. A key to the species of Helianthus of Nevada is presented.
