Linking ecosystem processes to sustainable wetland management

Abstract

The sustainability of ecosystems has become an explicitly stated goal of many natural resource agencies. Examples of sustainable ecosystem management, however, are uncommon because management goals often focus on specific deliverables rather than the processes that sustain ecosystems.

Conservation in an age of climate change

Are you a gardener? Then you know that certain species and varieties of species grow best in certain growing zones related to climate. This growing zone concept also applies to species in natural ecosystems. One threat of climate change to wetland biodiversity is that some species may be losing the ability to track an appropriate season for flowering, seed production and growth, impairing their ability to regenerate. Based on genetic constraints, such species may have a limited ability to adjust to changing climates. For biodiversity conservation to be successful in the future, the first order of business is to formulate the goals of such projects regardless of philosophical differences in approaches. If the real goal is to conserve species, then conservation planners may need to put all management options on the table. Despite the uncertainties, with the risk of species losses so imminent, the best strategy may be to throw any dogmatism out the window and use multiple approaches.

Significance of a 3D Elevation Program to wetland mapping

The recent National Enhanced Assessment conducted by the U.S. Geology Survey identified billions of dollars in potential annual benefits if a national-scale enhanced elevation data program was implemented. Given the importance of topography to wetlands, wetland mapping could benefit significantly from improved elevation data.

Are isolated wetlands isolated?

While federal regulations during the past 10 years have treated isolated wetlands as unconnected to aquatic resources protected by the Clean Water Act, they provide critical ecosystem services to society that extend well beyond their wetland boundaries. The authors offer well-documented examples from the scientific literature on some of the ecosystem services provided by isolated wetlands to society and other ecosystems.
