Abstract

The north-central US Midcontinent is underlain by a considerable thickness of sedimentary rocks, mostly Paleozoic, which lie upon a heterogeneous basement of Precambrian granitoid and metamorphic rocks. This article describes a representative sample of Midcontinent geology and explains why the authors believe this region is a 'new frontier' for mineral exploration and discovery. -Authors

New 10Be-26Al isochron burial dating informs the Pliocene and Pleistocene evolution of the lower Colorado River, southwestern United States

Four new 10 Be- 26 Al isochron burial ages ranging from 4.4 to 2 Ma on ancestral Colorado River deposits in the lower Colorado River corridor (LCRC) help constrain the river’s evolution during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. They help fill a gap between previous work that focused on older and younger deposits: Older dated deposits include the 5 Ma Bouse Formation, which records the integration of the Colorado River through a series of preexisting basins to the Gulf of California and the ca. 4.5 - 3.5 Ma Bullhead Alluvium, a 200 to 300 m thick aggregational package that immediately followed integration. The much younger, 100 - 70 ka, Chemehuevi Formation is another major aggradation package mapped throughout the LCRC. The new burial ages on the facies of Santa Fe Railway (4.37 ± 0.71 Ma), boulder conglomerate of Bat Cave Wash (2.12 ± 0.26 and 2.05 ± 0.31 Ma), and the Palo Verde alluvium (3.03 ± 0.26 Ma) partially fill in a 3.5 M.y. gap between the deposition of the Bullhead Alluvium and the Chemeheuvi Formation and document the timescales over which the Colorado River was able to remove the Bullhead aggradational package and initiate newer and smaller aggradational pulses.

Ratification of Neogene subseries as formal units in international chronostratigraphy

The International Union of Geological Sciences Executive Committee (IUGS EC) voted on 13 October 2021 to ratify a proposal for the Neogene subseries/subepochs to have formal status. They are now incorporated into a sixtiered chronostratigraphic hierarchy within the International Chronostratigraphic Chart (ICC). The Lower/Early Miocene Subseries/Subepoch comprises the Aquitanian and Burdigalian stages/ages, the Middle Miocene Subseries/Subepoch comprises the Langhian and Serravallian stages/ages, the Upper/Late Miocene Subseries/Subepoch comprises the Tortonian and Messinian stages/ages, the Lower/Early Pliocene Subseries/Subepoch comprises the Zanclean Stage/Age and the Upper/Late Pliocene Subseries/Subepoch comprises the Piacenzian Stage/Age. This ratification is an important move towards both a common language in the wider Earth Sciences community and a step forward in the unification of Cenozoic chronostratigraphy, with Neogene and Quaternary subseries/subepochs now formalized.

A practical solution: The Anthropocene is a geological event, not a formal epoch

The Anthropocene has yet to be defined in a way that is functional both to the international geological community and to the broader fields of environmental and social sciences. Formally defining the Anthropocene as a chronostratigraphical series and geochronological epoch with a precise global start date would drastically reduce the Anthropocene’s utility across disciplines. Instead, we propose the Anthropocene be defined as a geological event, thereby facilitating a robust geological definition linked with a scholarly framework more useful to and congruent with the many disciplines engaging with human-environment interactions. Unlike formal epochal definitions, geological events can recognize the spatial and temporal heterogeneity and diverse social and environmental processes that interact to produce anthropogenic global environmental changes. Consequently, an Anthropocene Event would incorporate a far broader range of transformative human cultural practices and would be more readily applicable across academic fields than an Anthropocene Epoch, while still enabling a robust stratigraphic characterization.
