Unusual behavior in the parental care of a house wren ( Troglodytes aedon ): Post fledging use of an old nest during cold nights

I report on the unusual behavior of an adult House Wren ( Troglodytes aedon ) leading recently fledged young back to the nest for two consecutive nights. The ambient temperature reached below 0°C during both nights. Despite disadvantages associated with remaining in the nest, this observation suggests that adult birds may assess trade-offs between perceived risks versus the benefits of engaging in other activities, in this case roosting communally for thermoregulation.

Geologic map of the Krumbo Reservoir Quadrangle, Harney County, Southeastern Oregon

The Krumbo Reservoir 7.5-minute quadrangle encompasses parts of the Blitzen Valley and northwestern flank of Steens Mountain in the Basin and Range physiographic province of southeastern Oregon (fig. 1). The entire map area is underlain by a bimodal assemblage of middle and upper Miocene olivine basalt flows and rhyolite ash-flow tuffs (figs. 2 and 3). This assemblage is characteristic of volcanic rocks in the northern Basin and Range province and is thought to result from Cascade Range back-arc volcanic activity (Hart and Carlson, 1987). Locally derived Quaternary alluvium blankets part of the area. Faulting associated with Basin and Range extension has created the north-trending Blitzen Valley. In contrast, west-northwest-striking faults are parallel to and probably related to the Brothers fault zone, a northwest-trending zone of closely spaced, discontinuous fractures (Walker, 1969c; Lawrence, 1976).

Mineral appraisal of the Harney Lake and Malheur Lake candidate areas of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, north-central Harney County, Oregon

The Harney Lake and Malheur Lake candidate areas are in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, north-central Harney County, Oreg. The two areas occupy the shallow center of the Harney Basin, a broad structural and physiographic depression filled by several varieties of silicic to mafic volcanic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and unconsolidated surficial deposits. Although some of the rocks in the Harney Basin are of Miocene age, all the rock in the two candidate areas are of Pliocene or younger age. Northwest-trending normal faults form prominent scarps in and near the two areas.
