Map showing a deep-tow geophysical study of the north end of the San Clemente Fault, California Borderland

A deep-tow geophysical study of a small ridge along the north end of the San Clemente fault, informally termed Kimki Ridge by Arne Junger and J.G. Vedder (unpub. data, 1979), was conducted in April 1976 using the R/V Melville of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The purpose of the survey was to search for evidence of active faulting along the north-ward extension of the San Clemente fault, a major structural feature in the California Borderland (fig. 1).

Trackline chart, bathymetric and seismic profiles acquired on R/V Lee Cruise 9-78-HW, near Hawaii

The U.S. Geological Survey research vessel S.P. Lee conducted a transit line from Honolulu, Hawaii to the big island of Hawaii during the cruise L9-78-HW. The navigational track is shown in plate 1 and the three types of data collected (3.5 khz. and 12 khz. bathymetry plus single channel seismic reflection) are shown in plate 2. The bathymetry records are 400 fathoms (one second sweep) collected by hull mounted transducers. The seismic reflection profiles are from a 148in 3 . Bolt Association Airgun* as energy source with reflectors transmitted via single channel streamer towed approximately 500 feet behind ship. Copies of the data may be obtained from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Boulder, Colorado 80303. *Use of commercial names does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Petrology of basalt from the East Pacific Rise near 21 degrees North latitude

Four dredge hauls of fresh tholeiitic basalt lava were recovered from a 3.3-kilometer-wide zone at the axis of the East Pacific Rise. Petrologic and major-element chemical studies indicate that the basalt ranges from moderately fractionated varieties to one sample enriched in iron and titanium. The four samples show no symmetrical compositional zonation across the ridge axis, but the two least fractionated and youngest samples occur on the east side of the ridge axis.
