Time of travel of selected Arkansas streams

Between 1971 and 1981, time-of-travel and dispersion measurements were made in 15 streams in Arkansas. Most of the streams studied were at or near base flow. Graphs are presented for predicting traveltime of solutes in segments of the streams studied. The relationship of time of passage and peak unit concentration to traveltime is presented for two of the streams. Examples of use and application of the data are given. (USGS)

Water-quality investigation of the Caney Creek watershed, northeast Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study, in 1977-78, of surface-water quality in the Caney Creek watershed are presented to document conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. Analyses of samples collected at two sites shows that water in Caney Creek and Caney Creek Ditch is of good quality with no serious water-quality problems.

Water-quality investigation of the Flat Bayou watershed, Jefferson County, Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study, in 1977-78, of surface-water quality in the Flat Bayou watershed, Jefferson County, Ark. are presented to document conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. Analysis of samples collected at two sites showed that oxygen depletion, as low as 32 percent of saturation at times, and high concentrations of pesticides on the streambed were the most serious water-quality problems in the watershed. The pesticides aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, and toxaphene were found in samples of the bottom material. One sample of bottom material contained an unusually high toxaphene concentration of 160 micrograms per kilogram.

Water-quality investigation of the Tyronza River Watershed, Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study of surface-water quality in the Tyronza River Watershed are presented to document conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. The report includes a general description of the watershed's topography, geology, and aquifers, and the results of monthly measurements of discharge at five sites, and several physical and chemical parameters, plus quarterly analyses for several ions and semiannual analyses of bottom material for various pesticides. Interpretation of the results indicates that the quality of the water in the streams and ditches sampled is normal for an intensely farmed area such as this watershed.

Water-quality data for the Village Creek Watershed, northeast Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study of surface-water quality in the Village Creek Watershed are presented to document conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. Analysis of samples collected at six sites showed that most of the concentrations found are in the range to be expected of drainage from an intensely farmed watershed. Dissolved-oxygen values range from low to medium. Arsenic was found in quarterly samples of water and bottom materials at all sites. Traces of a wide range of insecticides were found in samples of bottom materials from all sampling sites.

Water-quality investigation of the Vache Grasse Creek watershed, Sebastian County, Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study in the upper Vache Grasse Creek watershed, Sebastian County, AR., are presented to document surface-water quality conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. Analysis of samples collected at four sites showed that during periods of warm weather several of the parameters sampled produced unusually high or low values that indicated possible water-quality problems. Low dissolved-oxygen concentration, high nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations, and high coliform bacteria counts were at sampling sites upstream from the Greenwood water-supply lake. Sampling in and downstream from the lake indicated that the quality of the water passing through the lake was improved significantly. However, sampling in the lake indicated that there is a large layer of water with low oxygen concentration and a buildup of phosphorus, iron, manganese, and some other metals in the bottom ooze. Water-quality investigation of the Yellville watershed, Arkansas

The results of a 1-year study of surface-water quality in the Yellville watershed are presented to document conditions before implementation of Soil Conservation Service programs. Analyses of samples collected at three sites showed that water in Town Branch and East Prong Branch was of good quality except for bacteria, total residue, and sulfate concentrations, which at times exceeded criteria established by the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology.
