Marine magnetic gradiometer: A tool for the seismic interpreter

The marine magnetometer has been used since the early '50s as an ancillary tool on vessels conducting regional and local seismic surveys. Emphasis on marine magnetic data by academia has led to major discoveries about the structure of the earth's crust, such as the association of shallow, crustal magnetic anomalies to seafloor spreading and long-wavelength anomalies to deep crustal origin. The same enthusiasm has not occurred in industry primarily because greater emphasis has been placed on multichannel seismic reflection data.

Seismic reflection study of Flathead Lake, Montana

A seismic reflection survey of Flathead Lake, Montana, was carried out in 1970 to study the geologic structure underlying the lake. Approximately 200 km of track lines were surveyed resulting in about 140 km of useable data (Fig. 1). A one cu. in. air gun was used as the energy source. Navigation was by a series of theodolite sitings of the boat from pairs of shore-based control points.

Lake Ontario geological and geophysical data sources

A bibliography of various geological and geophysical data sources was compiled as part of an overall effort to evaluate the status of research on the Great Lakes. We hope that such a summary will be a catalyst for additional work and be an aid in planning future work. Our presentation has two forms: maps showing the locations of the different data types and a bibliography which lists the references from the maps and additional relevant papers. The charts shown in this map summarize the data source for Lake Ontario.
