Two new species of Plistophoroa (Microsporidea) from North American fish with a synopsis of Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes

Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdntri) and Plistophora crpedianar from gizzard shad ( Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst. An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.

The black-spot (Uvulifer ambloplitis: Trematoda: Strigeoidea) of centrarchid fishes

Adult Uvulifer ambloplitis were recovered from a kingfisher and the worm eggs were incubated. Helisoma snails were infected with the resultant miracidia. Cercariae, very similar, but not identical to Cercaria bessiae, were recovered and used to infect fish. It was possible to infect Lepomis macrochirus, but not Catostomus commersoni, Cottus bairdi, Carassius auratus, Notropis cornutus, N. rubellus, N. spectrunculus, Semotilus atromaculatus, S. corporalis, S. margarita, Ictalurus punctatus, Etheostoma flabellare or Salmo gairdneri. Development of the metacercaria was studied at 13° C, 21° C, and 24° C. There was almost no development at 13° C and development was about twice as rapid at 24° C as at 21° C. The origin of the cyst of parasite origin is discussed. The metacercariae live at least 4 1/2 years in the fish at 12° C. The adult is briefly described and compared with other species. A key to the adults is given.

Two new Gyrodactylus (Trematoda: Monogenea) from cyprinid fishes with synopsis of those found on North American fishes

Gyrodactylus atratuli from the blacknose dace ( Rhinichthys atratulus ) and the pearl dace ( Semotilus margarita ) is compared with known species of Gyrodactylus from North American fishes and described as a new species. Gyrodactylus margaritae from the pearl dace ( Semotilus margarita ) is compared with known species of Gyrodactylus from North American fishes and described as a new species. The average number of G. atratuli per blacknose dace in the natural habitat is 7.8 (1 to 32) and in the laboratory at the same water temperature after 55 days in captivity, 5.4 (0 to 11). G. atratuli and G. margaritae fail to live and reproduce on fish kept in nonrunning water at between 19 and 26 C in laboratory aquaria, but will live and reproduce in running spring water at 12 C in laboratory aquaria. An illustrated synopsis with a comparative table of measurements of known North American Gyrodactylus and a list of the species with brief reference to their differentiating characteristics are given.
