The use of the National Water Data Exchange in support of estuarine and coastal programs

The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) was established by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1976. Its program is directed toward improving the exchange of water and water -related data collected and made available by hundreds of federal and non-federal agencies throughout the United States. This paper describes the NAWDEX program and the services which can be provided to assist coastal and estuarine programs.

Identification codes for organizations listed in computerized data systems of the U.S. Geological Survey

This report contains codes for the identification of public and private organizations listed in computerized data systems. These codes are used by the U.S. Geological Survey 's National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX), National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE), National Cartographic Information Center (NCIC), Office of Water Data Coordination (OWDC). The format structure of the codes is discussed and instructions are given for requesting new codes. (USGS)

The Water Data Sources Directory is a computerized data base maintained and operated using the System 2000 data base management system. This manual contains instructions for the registration of organizations in the Water Data Sources Directory of the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX). The Directory contains information pertinent to organizations that are collectors and sources of water data, major sources of water data collected by other organizations, major users of water data made available by other organizations, or active in programs related to water resources. Detailed instructions are presented for the encoding of forms required for registration of an organization in the Directory.

NAWDEX: key to finding water data

As our Nation's resources are developed, water will play an increasingly important role, both as a resource to be developed and as a resource to be protected. The proper development and protection of our water resources, however, will depend on adequate data on the quantity and quality of our water. Much data have already been collected by hundreds of agencies, and much more are continuously being collected. Even though a vast amount of data is being collected, the potential user faces a bewildering problem in trying to determine if the specific information he needs has been collected and where it is available. To help solve these problems of matching user needs to available data, NAWDEX the National Water Data Exchange has been established.

Status of the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) - September 1977

Major progress in the implementation of the National Water Data Exchange (Nawdex) took place during Fiscal Year 1977--beginning October 1, 1976 and ending September 30, 1977. This report describes the status of the program at the end of this period. Program advancement is reported in the areas of administration, membership, Local Assistance Center facilities, development of the Water Data Sources Directory and the Master Water Data Index data bases, development of systems related to these data bases, and the coordination of services available through member organizations.

Program of operation for the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX)

The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) has been established as a nationwide program directed at improving access to water and water-related data and disseminating information about the availability of these data throughout the entire water-resources community. NAWDEX is composed of a confederation of water-oriented organizations working together to facilitate the exchange of data and to improve the technology of data handling and transfer. This report is intended to provide guidelines to assure that all member organizations participate equally and that a climate of cooperation and open communication is established among participating members. Status of the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX); September 1976

The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) has been established to assist users of water data in the identification, location, and acquisition of needed data. NAWDEX is not a depository of water data; its objectives are to provide the user with sufficient information to define what data are available, where these data may be obtained, and in what form they are available; also to describe some of their major characteristics. NAWDEX is comprised of water-oriented organizations in the Federal, State, and local governments, and in the academic and private sectors of the water-data community who work together to make their water data readily and conveniently available. Data search and referral services are currently provided through the Program Office established by the U.S. Geological Survey which has the lead-role responsibility for NAWDEX operations. During its first year of operation, a computerized Water Data Sources Directory was developed which identifies more than 300 organizations that collect water data, the types of data they collect, and the locations within these organizations from which the data may be obtained. NAWDEX is expanding its services and is establishing a nationwide network of Local Assistance Centers for local users ' access to these services. (Woodard-USGS)
