Determination of active oxygen in the presence of barium and lead

The method of Mrgudich and Clark is modified by substituting 5 per cent (by volume) perchloric acid for 50 per cent perchloric acid. Titration by potassium permanganate may be substituted for electrometric titration with ceric sulfate.

The addition of iodine to tetramethylammonium iodide

The system tetramethylammonium iodide-iodine-toluene has been studied by the solubility method at 6 and at 25°. The compounds (CH 3 ) 4 NI 3 , (CH 3 ) 4 NI 5 and (CH 3 ) 4 NI 11 were found to be stable phases at both temperatures. In addition, the compound (CH 3 ) 4 NI 10 was found at 6° and the compound (CH 3 ) 4 NI 9 at 25°. The dissociation pressures of the compounds at these temperatures were calculated from the solubility data.

The relationship of the rare-earth composition of minerals to geological environment

It has been known for a long time that the composition of the lanthanides in minerals is controlled to a large degree by crystallo-chemical factors, but is also greatly influenced by changes in geological environment. In general, igneous rocks rich in silica are favourable for the concentration of the heavy lanthanides and yttrium; those low in silica and high in carbonate are favourable for the concentration of the light lanthanides. These generalizations are illustrated by summaries of the available data on monazite, sphene, and apatite from different geological environments. Apatite of marine sedimentary origin (a large potential source of rare earths) shows marked depletion of cerium, as has been noted previously for sea water.

Summary of new data on rock samples G-1 and W-1

Published and unpublished analyses for major and minor constituents that have become available since April, 1960, are collected for the granite G-1 and diabase W-1. “Best values” are suggested for some of the elements.
