Motor-operated valve for fish culturists

Many fish culture systems require motoroperated valves to regulate water flow. The expense of commercial units can be prohibitive but, by using inexpensive components and a little assembly time, a manual valve can be motorized for a fraction of the cost.

Design and application of vacuum degassers

Designs of vacuum degassers, which alleviate gas supersaturation in hatchery waters, have progressed greatly in recent years. Basic rules of thumb now exist by which the feasibility of vacuum degassers can be determined for particular facilities, and by which complete systems can be designed and built to meet local needs. These rules are presented in the form of step‐by‐step procedures and guidelines directed to practicing hatchery operators. The flexibility of vacuum degasser designs is illustrated for large‐, medium‐, and small‐volume systems.

Progressive Fish-Culturist

Effective flow-through vacuum degasser for fish hatcheries

Since the fry of certain species of fish cannot tolerate even slight amounts of supersaturation, their water supplies must be degassed. Gas content can be reduced to subsaturated, sublethal levels by passing it through the vacuum degasser described here. The system includes a low-cost, flow-through unit easily capable of degassing (to less than saturated conditions) water flowing at 190 liters min −1 . In tests completed to date, dissolved oxygen content was never reduced below 7 ppm.
