Inheritance of muscle and liver types of supernatant NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)

The genetics of allelic variation for NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH-s) found in the supernatant of liver and white muscle extracts of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was examined. Twenty progeny from each of 50 controlled matings were examined for IDH phenotypes. Progeny data clearly indicated that the IDH-s variation in the muscle is controlled by two loci—one fixed and one with two alleles producing molecules of different electrophoretic mobilities. IDH-s variation in the liver is controlled by two disomic loci which code for four alleles. No linkage between the loci controlling IDH-s in the liver and the loci controlling it in the muscle was detected.

Effect on tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) on hematocrit values in rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri )

1. Anesthesia of rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri ) with 70 ppm tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) for 3-9 min resulted in a linear increase in hematocrit. 2. Handling of unanesthetized trout caused a higher and more variable hematocrit reading than did exposure to MS-222 for up to 3 min. 3. The range and standard error of hematocrit readings was smallest in trout treated with MS-222 for 1 min.

Tests for association of transferrin and lactate dehydrogenase phenotypes with weight gain in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)

Transferrin (Tf) phenotype was associated with weight gain in 147- and 230-day-old rainbow trout, but no association was found between lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) phenotype and weight gain. A total of 2038 progeny were examined from two different environments. Progeny lots were reared at densities below those known to affect mean fish weights. Differential survival among progeny with respect to their Tf of LDH phenotype was not detected.

Comparison of techniques for stabilizing hemoglobins of rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri ) during frozen storage

1. The stability of hemoglobin of rainbow trout under frozen conditions in oxyform, carboxyform, and cyanometform was examined. 2. Carboxyhemoglobin retained its original electrophoretic banding pattern after 14 days of frozen storage, whereas oxyform and cyanometform hemoglobins did not. 3. Banding patterns changed in some samples in all treatment groups after 21 days of storage.
