Quiet geomagnetic field representation for all days and latitudes

This paper describes a technique for obtaining the quiet-time geomagnetic field variation expected for all days of the year and distribution of latitudes from a limited set of selected quiet days within a year at a discrete set of locations. We used a data set of observatories operated by Indian and USSR scientists in 1976 and 1977 near 75°E longitude as illustration. Our method relies upon spatial smoothing of the decomposed spectral components. An evaluation of the fidelity of the resulting model shows correlation coefficients usually above 0.9 at the lower latitudes and near 0.7 at the higher latitudes with variations identified as dependent upon season and field element.

Upper mantle electrical conductivity for seven subcontinental regions of the Earth

Spherical harmonic analysis coefficients of the external and internal parts of the quiet-day geomagnetic field variations ( Sq ) separated for the seven continental regions of the observatories have been used to determine conductivity profiles to depths of about 600km by the Schmucker equivalent substitute conductor method. The profiles give evidence of increases in conductivity between about 150 and 350km depth, then a general increase in conductivity thereafter. For South America we found a high conductivity at shallow depths. The European profile showed a highly conducting layer near 125km. At the greater depths, Europe, Australia and South America had the lowest values of conductivity. North America and east Asia had intermediate values whereas the African and central Asian profiles both showed the conductivities rising rapidly beyond 450km depth. The regional differences indicate that there may be considerable lateral heterogeneity of electrical conductivity in the Earth's upper mantle.

A comparison of upper mantle subcontinental electrical conductivity for North America, Europe, and Asia.

Spherical harmonic analysis coefficients of the external and internal parts of the quiet-day geomagnetic field variations (Sq), separated for the N American, European, Central Asian and E Asian regions, were used to determine conductivity profiles to depths of about 600km by the Schmucker equivalent-substitute conductor method. All 3 regions showed a roughly exponential increase of conductivity with depth. Distinct discontinuities seemed to be evident near 255-300km and near 450-600km. Regional differences in the conductivity profiles were shown by the functional fittings to the data. For depths less than about 275km, the N American conductivities seemed to be significantly higher than the other regions. For depths greater than about 300km, the E Asian conductivities were largest. -Authors
